La Academia De Esperanza Charter High School is a small school dedicated to providing quality education for youth who desire a more individualized approach to their education. We have class sizes of 15-20 students and specialize in working with students who are struggling to receive the attention and help that they need in the larger school environment. While we are not a bilingual school, a large percentage of our population is bilingual, and we celebrate that!
For a small school, we offer a variety of electives: art, ceramics, crafts, yoga, film, chess, music, and philosophy are our current offerings. We also offer an after school murals class led by our art teacher extraordinaire, Margarita Paz-Pedro. Every year one of the murals projects is to design and install a tile mural in an elementary school. Additionally, we offer students the opportunity to participate in a variety of athletic activities: co-ed soccer, boys basketball, girls basketball, volleyball, and track. Another area of activity is our science program! We have a makers space (The Makers Zone) in which students learn how to use a range of tools, including a laser cutter and 3D printer, in order to create projects.
Our priority is that students learn in a healthy and engaging environment. We do not determine their learning by standardized test scores, but by the individual gains that they make during their time at Esperanza. We take into consideration the challenges that youth in our community can experience on a daily basis, and do our best to be a positive support system. Every individual is creative, expressive, and unique; as a community we strive to help students become who they want to be in the world and create the lives they want to see.
